Supporting Forgotten Lives: Care for Leprosy-Affected Families in Thalaivasal
About the Situation
In Thalaivasal, Salem District, Tamil Nadu, more than 35 families are living with the painful impact of leprosy. In most families, one or two members are affected by this disease. A majority of them are elderly people above 65 years, who are already vulnerable and dependent.
Many of these individuals have suffered severe physical loss — including fingers, legs, and even eyesight — due to leprosy and other health conditions like diabetes. Their daily life is filled with struggle, pain, and uncertainty.
Condition of Leprosy Patients
The situation of these patients is heartbreaking:

Many are abandoned or do not have family support

Several have lost fingers, legs, or eyesight

They are physically challenged and unable to work
They need constant care, support, and basic necessities to survive.
